Is it conviction or is it shame?
🌿 1. The Source
• Conviction comes from God’s love. It points to something specific that needs repentance or change but it’s done with the intent to restore you and draw you closer to Him.
“Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline.” — Revelation 3:19
• Shame comes from the enemy or the flesh. It speaks in generalities “you’re not enough” “you’ll never change” “you’re unworthy” It tries to separate you from God’s presence.
💡 2. The Tone
• Conviction is gentle, clear, and hopeful. It says, “You did this wrong, but here’s how to make it right. Let’s walk forward together.”
• Shame is harsh and hopeless. It says, “You are wrong. You’ll never be right. God is disappointed in you.”
🌤️ 3. The Result
• Conviction produces repentance and peace. You might feel sorrow at first, but it leads to freedom and a renewed sense of closeness with God.
“Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret.” — 2 Corinthians 7:10
• Shame produces withdrawal and self-condemnation. You feel stuck, distant, and less worthy to approach God.
✨ 4. A Quick Test
Ask yourself:
Is this thought pulling me toward God or away from Him?
If it leads to prayer, humility, and a desire to change; that’s conviction.
If it leads to hiding, despair, or self-hatred; that’s shame.
