The this could be you: 15 years of zeesy powers exhibition at vtape has a distinct aesthetic flavor of making people cringe. It criticizes Israel Palestine conflicts, Venezuela attacks, china- us- Iran wars, Samuel Paty killing, nice attacks in France, wars and other political events through videos of digital performance. It traces the history of colored people. It makes china look especially malevolent in the events of wars and global pandemic. China has had a great comeback in terms of its economy. Etc.
During my recent visit to the 15 Years of Zeesy Powers exhibition at Vtape, I was deeply struck by how the artist blends aesthetic discomfort with powerful political commentary. The exhibition leverages digital performance videos to expose and critique a wide array of global conflicts, including the Israel-Palestine struggle, attacks in Venezuela, and the complex geopolitics among China, the US, and Iran. What stood out to me was the exhibition’s unflinching portrayal of the historical experiences of people of color, interwoven with contemporary issues like the global pandemic and wars. The artist's focus on China's role was particularly thought-provoking — highlighting both its aggressive international posture and impressive economic comeback. It challenged me to reconsider how economic growth coexists with political controversies. I appreciated the way the videos made viewers 'cringe' yet reflect, creating a tense but necessary engagement with uncomfortable truths. This artistic approach fosters empathy and awareness by connecting historic trauma with present-day realities.
