Lose Weight While Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding can absolutely contribute to weight loss because milk production requires energy. But breastfeeding is not a guaranteed weight-loss plan.
Some moms lose weight quickly. Some hold onto weight. Sleep deprivation, stress, hormones, activity level, and overall calorie intake all play a role.
And remember: once you stop breastfeeding, those extra calories are no longer being burned. 👀
Did breastfeeding help you lose weight, gain weight, or stay about the same?

From my experience and conversations with other new moms, breastfeeding does help burn extra calories because producing milk requires energy—roughly 500 calories a day. However, it's important to understand that this doesn’t automatically translate to rapid weight loss for everyone. For many moms, factors such as sleep deprivation, stress, hormonal fluctuations, and diet quality play a significant role in postpartum weight retention or loss. I noticed that when I prioritized balanced meals and gentle exercise, combined with breastfeeding, my weight gradually returned to pre-pregnancy levels. But other moms simply didn’t see quick changes because their bodies were recovering in different ways. Another key point is that breastfeeding needs to be complemented by an overall healthy lifestyle. Calorie intake cannot be excessively high, or the expected calorie deficit may not occur despite breastfeeding. Also, once breastfeeding stops, many realize those extra burned calories disappear, so maintaining weight requires sustained healthy habits. Personally, I recommend focusing on mindfulness and self-love during this phase. Celebrate small victories, and don’t stress overly about the scale. Engaging with supportive communities where moms share real experiences—both struggles and successes—can be incredibly encouraging. The hashtag #babyweight often brings similar stories, reminding us that every breastfeeding journey and weight loss timeline is unique. Remember, breastfeeding is a wonderful bonding experience that may also support weight loss, but it should never be seen as the sole weight management strategy.
