Read moreIn my personal experience, one of the most fulfilling aspects of any relationship—whether it’s friendship, family, or romantic partnership—is having someone who genuinely shows interest in your passions, even if those interests don’t appeal to them directly. It creates a sense of validation and emotional support that goes beyond words. For example, I have a close friend who isn't into hiking, but she always listens enthusiastically whenever I share my hiking adventures. Even better, she sometimes joins me—not because she loves the activity, but because she values sharing that part of my life and supporting what I enjoy. This mutual effort has deepened our friendship tremendously. Showing interest in what others love fosters empathy and openness. It’s about valuing the person by embracing what they care about. This doesn’t mean you have to pretend to enjoy something or force yourself into uncomfortable activities, but the willingness to engage and understand means a lot. Supporting others’ interests also encourages shared experiences and opportunities to learn something new. When you try to appreciate or participate in what someone else loves, it strengthens trust and connection. It’s a simple yet meaningful way to build genuine closeness and respect. Ultimately, relationships thrive on authentic interest and emotional investment. When someone takes the time to care about what matters to you—even if it isn't their cup of tea—it creates a safe space for both people to grow and connect more deeply. It's one of the simplest acts that says, “I care about you.” This is a lesson I continually appreciate in my own life and relationships.
