If you are craving pure, old-fashioned comfort food, this savory hamburger steak bake is exactly what you need! Thick, juicy beef patties are smothered in a rich, homemade mushroom and onion gravy, then baked to absolute melt-in-your-mouth perfection. It is the ultimate hearty dinner to warm you up on a chilly weeknight!
The Ingredients:
1.5 lbs Ground beef
½ cup Plain breadcrumbs
1 large Egg & ¼ cup Whole milk
The Spices: 1 tsp salt, ½ tsp black pepper, and 1 tsp onion powder
8 oz White button mushrooms (sliced)
1 medium Yellow onion (thinly sliced)
2 tbsp Unsalted butter & 3 tbsp All-purpose flour
2 cups Savory beef broth
The Method:
1. PREP & MIX: Get your oven heated to 350°F and lightly grease a 9x13 baking dish. In a large bowl, gently mix your ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, and spices. (Pro tip: Mix just until combined—overworking the meat will make your steaks tough and dense!)
2. SHAPE: Form the seasoned beef mixture into six thick, oval patties and lay them right into your prepared baking dish.
3. SAUTÉ: Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Toss in those sliced onions and mushrooms and sauté for 5 minutes until beautifully softened.
4. THE GRAVY: Sprinkle your flour over the veggies and stir continuously for one minute. Gradually whisk in that savory beef broth to create a smooth, rich brown gravy. Let it simmer for 4 minutes until it thickens up gorgeously.
5. BAKE: Pour the hot, bubbling mushroom gravy evenly over the raw hamburger patties. Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 35 minutes until the meat is fully cooked through.
6. REST: Pull the dish from the oven and let it rest for 5 full minutes. This gives the rich gravy time to thicken to the absolute perfect consistency!
