A Paper With a Purpose… Douglass’ North Star
On a cold December day in 1847, a man who had escaped slavery walked into a small print shop in Rochester, New York, and changed history with ink and paper. Frederick Douglass had spent years speaking across the country, telling the truth about slavery to anyone with ears, and sometimes to those who didn’t want to hear it at all. Still, talking wasn’t enough for him. He wanted a message that couldn’t be twisted or silenced.
So he built his own platform.
That little shop became the first Black-owned printing press in the United States, and out of it came the very first issue of The North Star, a newspaper dedicated to ending slavery and fighting for equal rights. Douglass named it after the star enslaved people followed when escaping to freedom. A guiding light. A promise in the sky.
