Launched from the Bastion-P coastal defense system, this sequence is a masterclass in modern aerospace engineering. Here is what you’re seeing:
- The Cold Launch: The missile is first ejected vertically from its canister using a gas generator. This prevents the launcher from being damaged by the massive heat of the main engine.
- The Pivot: While suspended in mid-air, a ring of small directional thrusters near the nose fires with millisecond precision. This forces the missile to tilt nearly 90 degrees toward its programmed flight path.
- The Ignition: Only after the missile is horizontally aligned does the solid-fuel booster and liquid-fueled ramjet ignite, accelerating it to a staggering Mach 2.9.
