A taste of a European city in California!

As someone who has been going to school in LA for nearly 4 years now, I love getting out and going on day trips! This weekend, we decided to drive a couple hours up north to check out Solvang. It was the coolest Danish village with some amazing bakeries, shopping, and food! Great day trip

I recently drove up, and it honestly felt like I'd been transported straight to Denmark. The whole town is just adorable, with its distinct Danish-style architecture. Think charming half-timbered buildings, intricate facades, and those iconic windmills dotted around. Walking through the Solvang streets felt incredibly European – totally different from anything else in California! My absolute favorite part? The food! You can't go to Solvang without trying Arne's Famous Aebleskiver! These fluffy, spherical pancakes, often served with jam and powdered sugar, are a total must-try. I saw them everywhere, including the Solvang Restaurant, and they were just as delicious as they looked in photos. Besides Aebleskiver, the town is packed with incredible bakeries. I popped into a few, like the Danish Mill Bakery & Coffee Shop, and the pastries were out of this world. And for anyone with a sweet tooth, make sure to find the Fudge Kitchen – their selection is insane! Beyond the food, there's great shopping. You'll find unique boutiques selling everything from traditional Danish souvenirs to handcrafted goods. I loved browsing the quirky shops, especially the Solvang Shoe Store with its display of traditional clogs – they even had a giant red wooden shoe for photo ops! It's the perfect place to pick up a little something to remember your trip. Before even hitting downtown Solvang, we made a quick stop that was surprisingly fun: Ostrichland USA! Seriously, where else can you feed a flock of ostriches and emus? It’s a super quirky and memorable experience, especially if you're traveling with friends or family. Seeing those 'bad boys' up close and personal was a blast and definitely added an unexpected adventure to our day trip. For anyone planning a similar day trip from LA, Solvang is about a two-hour drive, making it totally manageable for a full day of exploring. I'd recommend going on a weekday, if you can, to avoid some of the weekend crowds, especially at popular spots like the bakeries. Wear comfy shoes because you'll want to wander every single street and soak in that unique European atmosphere. It’s truly a little slice of Denmark right here in California, offering a perfect escape with delicious treats and amazing photo opportunities!
