No one warned me how hard it would be

While this transition is what’s best for my family, I can’t help but simultaneously miss the past and look forward to the future.

The house is quiet now, but not in a comforting way like you might think. It’s a kind of quiet that reminds me they’re off and experiencing things without me.

The kids in school can be MEAN and idk why that didn’t seem to be a problem with homeschool, but it’s definitely the biggest con. Then there’s the limited time after school. With after school activities, homework, and dinner, there is so much less time to just be a family on the weekdays and bedtime seems to get pushed back because we’re cramming in everything we need to within a couple hours.

I’m so grateful for our 3 years of homeschool and the foundation it gave them, both academically and emotionally. I miss the family dynamic it gave us but there is beauty in this new season too.

We’re still figuring out how to make the most of the time we have, and even though this chapter looks different, I’m trying to trust that different can still be good.

... Read moreTransitioning from homeschooling to public school can be an intense and multifaceted experience for both children and parents. Many parents, like Laynah, find this new chapter filled with unexpected challenges, from the hushed quiet of an empty house to encountering schoolyard dynamics that homeschooling may have shielded their children from. One striking change that parents often notice is how quiet the house becomes during the day once the children start attending public school. While homeschooling keeps the family engaged and the home lively, public school creates a different dynamic where kids are away for long hours, which might make parents feel a subtle sense of loss or emptiness. However, this quiet also signals growth and independence as children embark on their own adventures outside the family sphere. A common difficulty reported is adjusting to the social environment. The social atmosphere in public schools can be more complex, with children experiencing bullying or meanness that was less evident or absent in a homeschooling setting. This adjustment period can be harsh as kids learn to navigate new social cues, relationships, and even encounters with unfamiliar slang and phrases. Another significant shift is the squeeze on family time. Unlike homeschooling where families often structure their day around shared learning and activities, public school involves bell schedules and packed agendas filled with after-school activities, homework, and dinner routines. This often results in less quality family time on weekdays and later bedtimes as everyone rushes to fit everything in. Parents also face the challenge of managing increased paperwork—forms, sign-ups, online portals, and reminders. This administrative load requires new organizational skills and adds to the overall complexity of the transition. Despite these challenges, there are positive aspects to this transition. Parents observe their children thriving in new and unexpected ways. Children might excel academically in some areas yet need support in others, reflecting diverse learning styles. The exposure to broader social groups and activities can build resilience and new skills. For families in this phase, it helps to maintain optimistic and flexible attitudes. Finding new routines that prioritize family moments, communicating openly about school experiences, and embracing the benefits of this new season can ease adjustment. Many parents find support and encouragement by connecting with communities sharing similar experiences under hashtags like #HomeschoolToPublicSchool, #MotherhoodJourney, and #FamilyRhythms. Ultimately, shifting from homeschooling to public school is a unique journey that brings both bittersweet farewells to the past and hopeful beginnings for the future. Embracing the differences and trusting that "different can still be good" helps families flourish despite the challenges.
