As a parent, one of the most exciting milestones is hearing your baby’s first clear words. However, it’s common for babies to delay saying certain simple words despite parents’ efforts. Many parents try teaching easy one-syllable words like "cow," "dog," or "cat," only to find their little ones resisting these specific words for a while. This can be confusing but is generally normal. From my experience, babies progress in language development at their own pace, and sometimes the words we expect them to say first aren’t the ones they choose. These simple words often require precise tongue and mouth movements, so they might take longer to pronounce. Instead, babies might start with sounds or words that are easier or more fun to say, even if they seem random to us. Patience is key. Consistently talking to your baby, reading books with colorful pictures of animals, and echoing their babbles encourages them to experiment with sounds. Celebrate all vocal attempts, not just perfect words. Sometimes singing songs or playing games that incorporate animal sounds can also motivate them to imitate. If your baby is not saying some expected words by 18 months, consider mentioning it to your pediatrician. Early intervention can help if there are any delays in speech development. But in many cases, it’s just a matter of time and loving repetition. Every child’s language journey is unique, and as parents, our role is to provide a rich language environment and celebrate each milestone, however it arrives.
