In my “I Don’t Have To” Era

There comes a point in healing where the goal is no longer proving yourself.

It’s choosing yourself.

Not out of bitterness. Not out of revenge. But because you’ve spent enough years carrying things that were never yours to hold.

If you’re in your “I don’t have to” era, this is your reminder:

You are allowed to rest.

You are allowed to set boundaries.

You are allowed to become someone your younger self would feel safe with.

🤎

For those navigating mother wounds, identity healing, and breaking generational cycles, What She Couldn’t Love, I Learned to Heal and the companion workbook were written with you in mind.

... Read moreStepping into the "I Don’t Have To" era is a transformative journey toward self-compassion and authentic healing. This phase embodies liberating yourself from burdens imposed by others or inherited from past generations—those wounds that were never yours to carry in the first place. I remember when I first recognized that I didn’t have to prove my worth to people who misunderstood me. It was a pivotal moment of release and empowerment. In this era, setting boundaries isn’t just an act of defiance; it’s a declaration of self-respect. For example, I found immense peace in saying no to situations that demanded I sacrifice my well-being or silence parts of my identity. Whether that was about not shrinking my voice or rejecting the obligation to earn love through overgiving, each boundary reinforced my commitment to myself. Healing from mother wounds and breaking generational cycles can feel daunting but also incredibly rewarding. I incorporated tools from supportive resources like dedicated workbooks and community discussions, which guided my progress. These helped me reparent my inner child and recognize patterns that no longer serve me. Through this, I became someone who my younger self would feel safe with, embodying authenticity rather than survival. Most importantly, embracing this era means we don’t have to trade our peace, joy, or truth for others’ approval. This is a radical act of self-love, especially powerful within Black and queer communities where societal expectations often suppress individual expression. I realized that the peace I sought was inseparable from embracing my full identity unapologetically. If you’re navigating this path, remember you are allowed to rest and prioritize your healing journey. Your story matters, and choosing yourself is the bravest choice you can make. Breaking free from the past opens space for joy and healing that generational trauma once obscured. This era isn’t about isolation but about cultivating a strong, peaceful foundation within yourself to show up fully and authentically in the world.
