Hip Mobility Routine

2024/12/21 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, let's get real for a second. How many of us have rushed into a leg day workout, or even just daily activities, without giving our hips the love they deserve? I know I used to be guilty of it, seriously skipping hip mobility drills. Big mistake! I'd feel stiff, my squats felt off, and sometimes I'd even get those annoying little aches. That's why I can't stress this enough: stop skipping hip mobility! It's not just for elite athletes; it's essential for everyone, whether you're hitting the gym hard, going for a run, or just want to move more comfortably through your day. Think of your hips as the central hub of your body's movement. When they're tight or restricted, it impacts everything from your lower back to your knees and even your ankle stability. A good hip mobility routine isn't just about 'stretching'; it's about preparing your joints and muscles to move through their full range of motion safely and effectively. This is especially crucial before any leg workout or strenuous activity. So, what kind of hip mobility exercises should you be doing? For a dynamic warm-up before the gym, focusing on controlled movements is key. I love incorporating drills like leg swings (forward/backward and side-to-side), hip circles, and cat-cow variations to gently wake everything up. These dynamic hip mobility exercises get blood flowing and prime your muscles without holding static stretches, which are better saved for after your workout. Many of you asked about specific drills for the gym, and some great ones include the groin rockback mobility drill and the adductor rockback mobility drill. These are fantastic for opening up the inner thighs and improving hip flexion, which can significantly enhance your squat depth and overall lower body strength. Just get into a kneeling position, widen your knees, and gently rock back, feeling the stretch in your groin and adductors. Remember to move slowly and listen to your body. But what if you can't make it to the gym, or you want to do some hip work at home? No problem! There are plenty of effective hip mobility exercises you can do right in your living room. My personal favorites for home-based hip mobility are the 90/90 stretch, pigeon pose, and butterfly stretch. These are excellent for improving external and internal rotation, which are often areas of tightness. For runners, adding specific runner hip mobility drills like the 'figure-four stretch' or active leg raises can make a huge difference in stride efficiency and preventing common runner's aches. It's not just about what exercises you do, but how consistently you do them. Even 5-10 minutes each day can yield incredible results. I try to do a mini hip mobility routine every morning, and it honestly sets the tone for my entire day. It helps with stiffness, especially if you have a desk job. For women, maintaining good hip mobility is particularly important for pelvic health and overall body alignment. In essence, hip mobility is your secret weapon for preventing injury, improving performance in the gym, and simply feeling better in your own skin. Don't underestimate its power. Make it a non-negotiable part of your fitness journey – you'll thank yourself later when you're hitting new personal bests or just bending over without a wince. Seriously, stop skipping hip mobility and start feeling the difference!

Didn't know that my hips were tight ever since I had my daughter 13 years ago. Started doing hip mobility exercises just a week ago and I notice so much...my workouts are easier (less pain). My hips aren't popping from every day tasks. Literally changed my life. I didn't know this was a thing until 🍋8.
