Growth conversations are often treated as standalone moments, but their effectiveness depends on what surrounds them. 🪻

For development to actually happen, those conversations need to be connected to real work, grounded in specificity, and continued over time.

From an adult learning perspective, growth is not created in a single interaction. It is shaped through ongoing application, reflection, and adjustment. 🪴

The conversation can create clarity, but the growth happens in what follows.

... Read moreFrom my experience in talent development, I've seen firsthand how growth conversations fall flat when treated as isolated events. A key insight is that these discussions thrive when connected directly to current projects or tasks, rather than vague future goals. This means focusing on specific challenges the individual is facing and providing actionable feedback they can apply immediately. Moreover, growth is a dynamic process that unfolds over time. After a growth conversation, I encourage setting short-term check-ins or reflections to track progress and adjust actions accordingly. This ongoing cycle of feedback, application, and reflection helps embed learning deeply. Incorporating real work examples in discussions also creates a strong feedback loop, making the conversation more relevant and impactful. Instead of abstract advice, tying development points to actual outcomes makes it easier for learners to understand and embrace improvements. The idea that "growth happens between conversations" resonates strongly with me. It highlights that the conversation's clarity is just the starting point - true growth comes from what the learner does afterward, applying insights in real situations. By adopting this approach—grounding growth conversations in the context of real work, ensuring specificity, and maintaining ongoing dialogue—leaders can foster meaningful adult learning and sustainable talent development that transcends one-off coaching moments.
