Toxic managers usually are not a secret.

People know.

They know who causes turnover. They know who people are afraid of. They know who creates stress, conflict, and burnout.

But instead of addressing it, organizations often explain it away.

“They’re just direct.”

“They’re under a lot of pressure.”

“That’s just how they are.”

“They get results.”

At some point, repeated complaints stop being a mystery and start being evidence.

A toxic manager does not survive by accident.

Someone made the choice to tolerate the harm.

... Read moreFrom my own experience working under challenging management, I have seen firsthand how toxic managers continue to thrive in their positions—not because their behavior is unnoticed, but because organizations often unintentionally enable them. Toxic managers frequently get away with harmful actions because leadership chooses to overlook the damage they cause. Common excuses such as "They’re just direct," or "They operate under a lot of pressure," serve to justify behavior that leads to employee distress and high turnover. I've noticed that when complaints about these managers accumulate, instead of leading to accountability, they often become dismissed or normalized as part of the company culture. What struck me most is that the issue isn’t the manager acting alone but the system protecting them. Someone in the organization decided it was acceptable to tolerate the disruption and disengagement caused by toxic leadership. When companies fail to act, the ripple effects include increased conflict, stress, and ultimately, burnout among employees. The power a toxic manager holds is intertwined with organizational choices—some benefit from ignoring the warnings to maintain short-term results or avoid uncomfortable confrontations. From a personal viewpoint, exposing toxic leadership requires collective courage and a commitment to prioritize well-being over mere output. Addressing toxic management is essential for healthier workplace culture. Encouraging transparent feedback, supporting whistleblowers, and enforcing consequences can prevent the normalization of harmful behaviors. Through these steps, organizations can foster leadership that inspires rather than intimidates, reducing turnover and improving employee retention. Ultimately, toxic managers do not survive by accident; they persist because of decisions made at higher levels to look away, but that can change when those decisions prioritize people’s well-being.
