Not every difficult coworker is obvious.

Sometimes it’s the person who always has the right words.

The one who seems supportive.

The one who says they’re “just looking out for you.”

The people who earn your trust should also earn your confidence.

Pay attention to patterns.

Who respects your boundaries?

Who celebrates your success when you’re not in the room?

Who keeps your confidence when it would be easier to share it?

Who treats everyone with consistency—not just the people who can benefit them?

Trust isn’t built by charm.

It’s built by repeated behavior.

Protect your peace.

Not everyone at work deserves a front-row seat to your life.

💬 What’s one workplace behavior you’ll never ignore again?

... Read moreNavigating difficult coworkers can be challenging, especially when their behaviors aren't overt. From my own experience, it’s often the people who seem the most supportive or say all the right things who can cause the greatest strain in the workplace. What helped me most was learning to observe patterns over promises. For example, a coworker might claim to have your back but consistently shares your personal conversations in performance reviews, undermining your trust. Another red flag I noticed was coworkers celebrating my successes to my face but casting doubt about my abilities behind my back. This kind of inconsistency made it clear that their interest was self-serving rather than genuine. I also found that those who only reach out when they need emotional support but vanish when I needed help were not reliable allies. Trust-building at work isn’t about charm or what someone says; it’s about repeated, consistent behavior. I learned to pay close attention to who respects my boundaries and who keeps confidence private—even when gossiping is tempting. Protecting your peace means not everyone deserves access to your personal life, regardless of how friendly they seem. In practice, I began setting clearer boundaries and limited sharing personal information with those who demonstrated inconsistency. This fostered a healthier work atmosphere and allowed me to focus on building genuine professional relationships. If you watch what people repeatedly do, not what they say, you’ll be better equipped to protect yourself from office politics and cultivate a trustworthy network that supports your career growth and professional development.
