ADHD = Feeling All the Feelings

My therapist said something today that really stuck with me: “People with ADHD don’t just feel—they are feelings.” She explained that we tend to experience emotions very intensely, especially in friendships and romantic relationships. That intensity can sometimes overwhelm the other person, even when our intentions are pure.

Honestly… that hit hard because I’ve definitely seen it in myself. When I care, I care hard. Small things can trigger huge emotional reactions, and it can feel exhausting trying to manage it all while also worrying about how others are perceiving me.

I’m curious—do you relate to this? Have you ever felt like your ADHD makes your emotions feel bigger than they should?

... Read moreMany individuals with ADHD often find themselves overwhelmed by the magnitude of their emotions. This isn't just about feeling strong emotions occasionally; it’s a core experience where emotions are felt deeply and intensely on a continual basis. The phenomenon that 'people with ADHD don’t just feel—they are feelings' reflects how ADHD affects emotional regulation and sensitivity. In practical terms, this means that someone with ADHD might react to situations with an emotional intensity that others may find surprising or overwhelming. This can impact friendships, work relationships, and romantic partnerships. The heightened sensitivity can lead to rapid mood shifts or stronger emotional responses to minor triggers, making everyday interactions feel like emotional rollercoasters. Understanding this emotional intensity is crucial for both people with ADHD and those close to them. For the person with ADHD, recognizing that these big emotions are part of their neurologic wiring can reduce self-judgment and improve self-compassion. It also highlights the importance of developing coping strategies such as mindfulness, emotional regulation techniques, or working with therapists who specialize in ADHD. For friends, family, and partners, learning about this emotional aspect of ADHD can foster empathy and patience. Knowing that these feelings are genuine and deeply experienced rather than exaggerated or manipulative encourages supportive and constructive communication. Many people with ADHD find it helpful to create safe spaces where their emotional expression is validated rather than minimized. This validation can significantly improve self-esteem and relationship quality. Additionally, connecting with communities or support groups focused on ADHD can provide a shared space to discuss these emotional experiences. If you relate to this intense emotional experience, you're not alone. It's part of the ADHD experience that often goes unrecognized but plays a significant role in how individuals perceive themselves and interact with the world. Embracing this aspect can lead to enhanced self-awareness and healthier emotional management, turning emotional intensity from a challenge into a unique strength.
