A rant
I really don’t think that this is an unpopular opinion but almost every single time I go for a walk at this park where dogs are required to be on a leash there is someone whose dog is not on a leash.
And they try to convince me that their dog is friendly. I don’t care. I think it is pretty clear by my body language that I am uncomfortable if l am holding my dog purposely close to me while we pass each other. I don’t know what part of that gives people the impression that I want our dogs to hang out.
As someone who enjoys peaceful walks in the park with my dog, I completely understand the discomfort when encountering unleashed dogs, especially in areas where leash laws are clearly posted. Even if a dog is friendly, the unpredictability of behavior in public settings can cause anxiety for many owners and their pets. From personal experience, holding my dog close during encounters is a natural response to feeling unsafe or uneasy, not an invitation for interaction. It's important for all dog owners to recognize and respect these non-verbal cues. Ignoring leash requirements and assuming everyone welcomes an off-leash dog disregards others’ comfort and safety. Furthermore, leash laws exist not only to protect other dogs and their owners but also to safeguard wildlife and prevent accidents. When dogs are off-leash, they might chase animals, disrupt the environment, or potentially get into dangerous situations. Responsible dog owners should always carry and use a leash, regardless of how friendly they believe their dog is. If you've ever been in a similar situation, you know how difficult it can be to address it without seeming confrontational. One approach that has worked for me is calmly explaining my concerns and emphasizing that it’s about safety, not personal judgment. Many people don’t realize the impact of their actions and might be more considerate when made aware. Walking should be an enjoyable experience for everyone involved — owners and dogs alike. By adhering to leash laws and respecting others’ boundaries, we contribute to a safer, more pleasant community environment for all dog lovers.
