My (not yet banned) Book Recommendations: Part 1
I figured it was finally time for me to jump into the booktok realm and show you all some of my favorites. I’m usually not a nonfiction reader but for books like these I will gladly make exceptions. All of them are a bit long but there can be no value put on understanding the true history of the world and of America.
We live in times where people would rather bury the truth then discuss its implications and do better. It’s all of our responsibilities to learn this information, question ourselves and what we thought we knew and right the ship. It’s OKAY if you were taught a whitewashed, incorrect history. It’s not your fault but it IS your problem. So go and problem solve with these books 📚

It’s a testament to courage in the face of unimaginable adversity. 'Life On The Color Line' by Gregory Howard Williams is another eye-opener. Imagine growing up believing you're white, only to discover later in life that your true heritage is Black, especially in the Midwest. This memoir beautifully explores the complexities of identity, race, and belonging in America, pushing me to think deeply about how race is perceived and constructed in society. For a profound re-evaluation of American origins, 'An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States' by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz is non-negotiable. It offers a crucial counternarrative to traditional history lessons, revealing the devastating impact of colonization and the ongoing struggles of Native American communities. It's a challenging read, but absolutely vital for anyone wanting a more complete picture of our past. 'The 1619 Project' by Nikole Hannah-Jones is a monumental work that reframes American history around the consequences of slavery. It delves into the profound and lasting effects of the enslavement of African Americans on every aspect of American life, from its economy to its culture. This book sparked so many conversations for me and really highlighted how much more there is to learn beyond what we're taught in school. And finally, 'The Secret Holocaust Diaries' by Nonna Bannister offers such a personal and harrowing look at the Holocaust. Reading a firsthand account of someone’s experiences during such an unimaginable time brings a level of human connection that statistics simply can't. It’s a testament to endurance and the importance of remembering, ensuring that these stories are never forgotten. These books might be challenging, not just in length but in the difficult truths they present. But that's exactly why they’re so important. They encourage critical thinking, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the struggles and triumphs that have shaped our world. Don't shy away from stories that make you uncomfortable; often, those are the ones that teach us the most.
