In my experience dealing with narcissistic abuse, one manipulation tactic that often goes unnoticed is the 'playing dumb' strategy. Narcissists deliberately feign ignorance or confusion to avoid taking responsibility for their actions. This tactic can be incredibly frustrating because it puts you in a position where you question your own perceptions or feel pressured to explain yourself repeatedly. What makes this tactic effective is how it preys on your emotional responses—by acting helpless or confused, the narcissist shifts the focus away from their wrongdoings and onto your reactions. Over time, this can erode your confidence and make setting boundaries difficult. It's important to recognize when someone is using this tactic. If you notice repeated patterns where they evade accountability by pretending not to understand or remember key points, it’s a sign of manipulation. Instead of engaging emotionally, try calmly restating facts or setting clear limits without getting drawn into endless explanations. Another critical aspect is understanding that this behavior is a classic narcissistic defense mechanism. They use it to escape consequences and maintain control. By staying aware of such tactics, you empower yourself to respond assertively rather than react defensively. If you have a parent or close family member who uses this tactic, it’s especially challenging. You may feel tied to them emotionally but find their behavior a deal-breaker for your mental health. In these cases, setting strong personal boundaries and seeking external support can be vital steps toward healing. Remember, you don’t have to tolerate manipulation or diminish your own experiences. Recognizing and naming these tactics is the first step toward reclaiming your power in relationships affected by narcissistic abuse.
