Living with or recovering from narcissistic abuse, especially from a narcissistic mother, is an emotionally complex journey. One common experience is the sudden shift in a mother's behavior when her adult child starts to establish their own identity and express opinions that differ from hers. The phrase "I don't have a daughter anymore" or similar disownment statements are a form of emotional manipulation meant to enforce control and punish independence. In my experience, understanding this twisted form of love—or lack thereof—is the first step toward healing. Narcissistic mothers often expect their children to be mere extensions of themselves, not autonomous individuals. When a child challenges this by having a unique personality or asking questions, the narcissist may feel threatened. Their response can be to "disown" the child, hoping to make them feel rejected enough to conform. Recognizing this pattern helped me detach emotionally from the harmful expectations and work on building self-validation. Recovery involves setting boundaries and seeking support from others who understand narcissistic abuse. It is helpful to remember that being disowned or rejected in this way is about the narcissist’s inability to accept a separate identity, not a reflection of your worth. If you or someone you know is navigating recovery from such abuse, know that healing is possible. Engaging with support groups, therapy, and reading about narcissistic abuse recovery can provide tools to rebuild confidence and redefine relationships on your terms.
