Value-for-money hotel in Chengdu 🇨🇳

📍Shanshui S (Kuanzhai Alley Tianfu Square)

Was very surprised when I stepped into the room because it was almost like a mini suite!

This cost us around SGD 70/night for the 2 of us so it works out to around SGD35/pax/night.

Why we chose this hotel:

There are many "hotels" in China that are disguised and located in apartment buildings, which was something we didn't want for this trip, and wanted a hotel in its own standalone building.

The only down side is that the wifi does not work on IPhones, but it was a small issue as we were using esims, so we were still able to connect to the internet.

Cleanliness: 5/5

Ambience: 5/5

Value: 4/5

Remote Workability: 2/5

... Read moreIf you’re considering a stay at Shanshui S Hotel in Chengdu, here’s a bit more about why I found it worth the price. The location is fantastic — just a short walk to popular spots like Kuanzhai Alley and Tianfu Square, making it easy to explore Chengdu’s historic and modern attractions. The room itself felt unexpectedly spacious, almost like a mini suite, which really enhanced our comfort compared to standard hotel rooms in the area. One feature I appreciated was the small washing machine in the bathroom, which was incredibly convenient during my longer trip when packing light. It saved me multiple trips to laundromats and gave that home-away-from-home feeling. The bathroom facilities also included separate shower and toilet areas, a hairdryer, and complimentary toiletries. The lobby provides light snacks and hot drinks, and every night they offer a simple supper like porridge, which felt cozy after a day of sightseeing. The breakfast options were somewhat basic, but I think that varies with personal taste. Connectivity was the only minor hiccup — the WiFi struggled to work on iPhones, probably something to consider if you rely on seamless internet access. Thankfully, I had an eSIM and could use mobile data without issue. Also, free bottled water is available near the lift lobby, and there’s a handy phone there to call the front desk if you don’t want to go all the way down. For remote workers, I’d rate the hotel’s workspace potential lower, but for travelers seeking comfort and good value in a standalone hotel building in Chengdu, Shanshui S hits the mark. It’s a solid pick if you want to avoid apartment-style hotels often found in China and prefer a hotel with good cleanliness and atmosphere at a reasonable price.

This isn’t Europe, it’s Jiuzhaigou!
If you’re in Chengdu, Jiuzhaigou is a must-visit! Since it’s pretty far from the city, I’d recommend staying at least 2 days here. Hotels are surprisingly affordable, and a full day at Jiuzhaigou Valley National Park is more than worth it. Once inside, free shuttle buses will bring you around. T
