š Swarm!
I failed to take adequate swarm control measures in the last two weeks. The penalty for such mistakes is climbing trees and collecting swarms.
Even though bees will sometimes swarm despite the best control measures taken, I feel like I could have done better on this one - this was a very large 4-5lb swam! I think I know which hive it issued from, but we'll find out when I next inspect.
Glad we were able to catch them! ššš
Swarming is a natural behavior for honeybees, usually signaling the start of a new colony. While prevention is ideal, occasionally swarms will still occur despite careful control measures. From personal experience, I found that missing regular inspections can increase the risk of swarming by letting colonies become overcrowded or queen cells develop unnoticed. One effective method to catch swarms is to prepare swarm traps near your apiary or known flight paths. These traps typically mimic a suitable hive and attract scouts looking for a new home. When a swarm settles briefly on a tree or structureāas happened in my caseāyouāll need to act quickly. Using a bee brush and protective gear, gently collect the swarm into a hive box. Itās a physically demanding task, often involving climbing, but rewarding once successful. Post-capture inspection of your hives is critical. I suspected which hive the swarm came from based on behavior and inspections. When checking, look for queen cells, signs of overcrowding, or colony stressors. Addressing these can help prevent future swarms. Additionally, applying integrated swarm control techniques such as regular splits, adding supers for space, and requeening can reduce swarm likelihood. Remember, even experienced beekeepers encounter swarms, so resilience and learning from each event are key. Catching a swarm can expand your apiary or save valuable bees from lost colonies, making the effort worthwhile. In my experience, patience, preparation, and prompt action are essential for effective swarm catching and hive management. Embracing the challenges of swarming can deepen your connection with your bees and improve your apiary's productivity over time.
