Hey everyone! So, you saw my 'get ready with me for my 28-week appointment' post, and I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what you can truly expect when you hit this exciting milestone. Entering the third trimester feels huge, and this appointment is a big one. It's not just another check-up; it's when your doctor really starts focusing on the final stretch of your pregnancy journey. For many of us, the 28-week appointment is famous for the *glucose screening test*. This test checks for gestational diabetes, which is important to monitor. Usually, you'll drink a super sweet drink and then have your blood drawn an hour later. Don't worry, it's quick, and the nurses are always so understanding! Besides that, they'll typically check your blood pressure, weight, and urine for any signs of protein or sugar. They'll also measure your fundal height – that's the distance from your pubic bone to the top of your uterus – to make sure your baby is growing on track. And of course, listening to that beautiful heartbeat never gets old! If you're Rh-negative, this appointment is often when you'll receive your Rhogam shot. This shot prevents your body from producing antibodies that could be harmful to your baby if their blood type is Rh-positive. It sounds a bit intimidating, but it's a routine and crucial part of care. We also had a good chat about fetal movement and what to look out for. Your doctor will likely discuss kick counts and when to call if you notice any changes. It's so reassuring to feel those little flutters and kicks become stronger! Beyond the appointment itself, reaching 28 weeks means your baby is growing rapidly! They're getting ready to pack on the pounds (just like I'm hoping for my chunky monkey!). You might notice more pronounced movements, and your little one is starting to develop more fat layers under their skin. For us mamas, the third trimester can bring its own set of unique symptoms. Swelling in your hands and feet is common, as is increased back pain due to the growing belly. Staying hydrated and finding comfortable positions can really help. This is also a great time to start thinking about your birth plan, if you haven't already, and discussing any questions you have with your provider. We talked about classes, hospital tours, and what to expect in the coming weeks. It feels a bit overwhelming but also incredibly exciting. Just remember, every pregnancy is different, so always chat with your doctor about specific concerns. I’m so excited (and a little nervous!) for what the rest of this journey holds. Wishing all you mamas a healthy and happy third trimester!
