SWEET HONESTY: THE SWEET SERIES BOOK 1
I really enjoyed this book. It was a great story full of love and dedication. There was love, drama, honesty, trust, insecurities, and family. What stood out to me was the family's support. Alex and Mickey's story unfolds as they live in the 1950s amid segregation and homophobia. Michael and Alexander, two Black gay men in the 1950s, have to carefully live in their truth due to the laws and out of fear of losing family and loved ones who will not understand their love.
Michael watched the man he loved marry a woman and then immediately left for New York. He was no longer willing to hide who he was and was not about to watch his ex run around town with his new wife. Alex's confidence and bravery were juxtaposed against his struggles with commitment and finding someone who made him want and feel—the fear and struggles of being black and a Friend of Dorothy. I was scared for them and rooting for them the entire time. Mike and Alex had such a beautiful love story. Alex and Michael are a top-tier match. Their honesty, communication, and sense of family are only bested by their all-consuming love for each other. Their support network was excellent! Mothers, aunts, cousins, sisters, and brothers had it all; they needed it all in a world that could be cold and cruel. I HATED!! They couldn't love each other in public, hug, kiss, or hold hands. I felt so bad for them. Alex's friend Jack, it was so sad how the police beat him for just being gay. If they never came to get him, they would have killed him. Mike's ex-Lamont aggravated men he didn't want to let go. Lamont chose who he wanted. He was so scared to be himself and broke Mike's heart, and now he is trying to return. I love how Alex treated Mike, something he never got from Lamont—this Book. I didn't want it to end. I can't wait to read the next one.
This book moved me. The way my people looked out for each other and came togather was everything. The things black people had to endure back then were a lot and made me angry. Black people are the STRONGEST people I know, period. I love my black men and women. I learned a lot from reading this book.
