Flu season can hit hard, and getting sick at the worst possible time — like right before fun plans — is something I’ve experienced too. It’s incredibly frustrating to feel stuck at home, while everyone else is out having a good time. The feeling of FOMO (fear of missing out) is real and can even make you feel isolated or guilty, especially if your siblings or close ones get to go without you. One thing I’ve found helpful is acknowledging that health must come first. No event is worth compromising your well-being. When I’m sick, I try to shift my focus from what I’m missing to what I can do while resting — whether it’s catching up on a favorite show, journaling, or planning something special to do once I’m better. Keeping in touch with family can also help — like texting or video calling to feel included even when you can’t be there physically. Also, being the youngest sibling often means you might feel more left out or less in control of decisions, adding another layer to those feelings. It helps to communicate openly with family about your feelings so that they understand what you’re going through. Lastly, I remind myself that flu season is temporary, and though these setbacks are tough, there will be plenty of opportunities to create memories once I’m healthy again. Sometimes, taking care of yourself during these times is the best gift you can give both yourself and your loved ones.
