Still Dehydrated? These Mistakes Matter (Pt 4)

If you’re constantly drinking water but still feel dry, tired, headachy, or like everything just goes right through you, it’s probably not about willpower—and it’s not about drinking more.

Hydration is about absorption, not volume.

Some common mistakes I see all the time:

• chugging instead of steady sipping

• relying on plain water without minerals

• starting the day with caffeine before fluids

• not adjusting intake for heat or movement

• avoiding sodium without balancing minerals

When minerals are off, water doesn’t get into the cells where it’s actually needed.

This is especially relevant if you’re dealing with fatigue, hormone shifts, thyroid or autoimmune patterns, or high stress—because hydration and mineral balance are foundational, not optional.

The key is how your body absorbs the fluids, and that’s closely tied to maintaining a proper mineral balance. I used to think the solution was simply drinking more water, but symptoms like persistent fatigue and headaches made me realize something was off. One crucial mistake I made was chugging large amounts of water quickly, hoping to quench thirst immediately. However, steady sipping allows the body to absorb water more effectively rather than flushing it out too fast. I also ignored the importance of electrolytes—minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium—which help regulate hydration at a cellular level. Starting my day with caffeine instead of drinking water first led to further dehydration. Caffeine can act as a diuretic, increasing fluid loss, so I now make it a point to hydrate with mineral-rich water before my morning coffee. Adjusting hydration based on activity and climate is another factor I underestimated. On hotter days or after exercise, the body loses more minerals through sweat, so just drinking plain water without replenishing electrolytes left me feeling drained. Even if you’re on a low-sodium diet, it’s vital to ensure your body has a healthy mineral balance. Without enough sodium, water struggles to enter the cells where it’s needed most, leading to what feels like persistent dehydration. Recognizing early signs of dehydration like dry mouth, headaches, or fatigue has helped me intervene sooner. My go-to now includes adding a pinch of natural sea salt or electrolyte supplements to my water, which has significantly improved how hydrated I feel. If you’ve been told to "just drink more water" but still feel dehydrated, revisiting your hydration habits and mineral intake might be the missing piece. Proper hydration is foundational to managing fatigue, hormone imbalances, and stress—so paying attention to how and what you drink can make all the difference.
