Burnaby Lake Park offers a unique hiking experience quite different from more developed urban parks. When planning a visit, I found it essential to come well-prepared due to the park's mostly undeveloped trails, which are rocky and can be tough on your footwear. From personal experience, wearing sturdy hiking shoes is a must, as the gravel paths can quickly wear out less durable soles. One key insight is the importance of planning your route carefully. The hiking trail forms a loop around the lake, but there are limited access points, and some exits lead only to bicycle paths or dead ends near busy highways. If you don’t complete the full loop, you might find yourself stuck or forced to backtrack, which can be frustrating and physically demanding. Despite the challenges, the park rewards those who traverse its paths with peaceful natural scenery. Although much of the lake is obscured by trees, the serene sound of flowing water near small streams and the occasional glimpses of wildlife, like the graceful herons standing silently by the water, create memorable moments. Another practical tip is to bring your own water and snacks, as there are no refreshment facilities or public restrooms along the trail. The limited seating means frequent rest stops are hard to come by, so pacing yourself and taking breaks is important. Unlike more manicured parks in the Burnaby area such as Central Park or Deer Lake, Burnaby Lake Park feels like a step into a wilder side of nature. While it lacks extensive amenities, it offers an authentic outdoor adventure for those prepared to face its natural terrain. For public transit users, the convenience of a bus stop at the main entrance makes accessing the park easier, connecting to the SkyTrain at 22nd Street. This adds to the park’s appeal as a day-trip destination for anyone looking to escape into nature without needing a car. In summary, Burnaby Lake Park is ideal for visitors who appreciate a more natural, less developed environment and are willing to plan ahead to tackle its hiking trails. It’s a place to disconnect, enjoy the quiet of the forest, and possibly capture some rare wildlife photos, just like seeing the heron patiently fishing by the stream.
