Tanglin Halt Hawker Centre: A Lor Mee To Die For🤤✨

If you're in the Buona Vista/Commonwealth area and on the hunt for a good meal, you might want to consider the food scene at Tanglin Halt Hawker Centre. I recently gave a popular lor mee stall there a shot, and I was pleasantly surprised —this is coming from someone who usually avoids the dish entirely.

What usually puts me off is the strong alkaline taste of the yellow noodles and a soup that's just too thick and heavy. This place, however, was a different story. The noodles were cooked just right, with a nice bite, and didn't have that typical unpleasant taste. The gravy was thick but didn't feel overly gluey, and it had a subtle, herby note that was a great addition.

The toppings were also a highlight, especially the fried fish🤤🤤🤤. The skin was incredibly crispy and stayed that way, even after soaking in the gravy for a while. The chicken thigh was tender too, but that fried fish was the real star ✨.

The uncle who runs the stall is a bit of a stickler for his perfect recipe—he's got the proportions of garlic, chili, and vinegar down to a science. You can ask him to leave something out, but you might get a little side-eye for it🥴! Just kidding, he’ll adjust it to your liking. They also have extra white pepper and vinegar on the side for you to add.

❗️❗️❗️Now, for a crucial tip: Make sure you purchase it ONLY when the older uncle is the one manning the stall. His version is truly a cut above the rest. Another day I visited, a younger person was working, and the dish just wasn’t quite the same. The noodles were clumped together (not well cooked in the boiling water I supposed), the herbal flavor was missing from the gravy, and the fried fish lost its crispiness way too fast. There's also a noticeable lack of attention to detail—the corners of the bowl were left unwiped, with gravy and sauces spilling over. While not a bad dish, it was a noticeable drop in quality. Additionally, the uncle wears a hearing aid and can be a little slow, so please be patient. I truly hope that the younger generation will catch up with their culinary skills and be more meticulous like the old uncle because this is a gem worth preserving 🙏🏽 ❤️ .

... Read moreTanglin Halt Hawker Centre isn't just a spot for lor mee lovers; it's a hub for authentic flavors crafted with care. Beyond the famous lor mee, you can explore other stalls offering local favorites like mee goreng, fish soup, and chap lau. If you're visiting, remember that consistency varies depending on who’s at the stall. My advice? Go during the older uncle’s shift—his attention to the right noodle texture and the balance of garlic, chili, and vinegar is unmatched. On my visits, I noticed that the stall also offers extras like braised eggs and popcorn chicken, perfect to complement your meal. The fried fish stays crispy even after soaking in the flavorful gravy, which I found remarkable compared to other lor mee stalls. For those curious about payment, the hawker centre embraces modern convenience with options like Scan To Pay and partnerships with platforms like GrabFood and ShopBack, making it easy to order in or dine on-site. Plus, the presence of CDC vouchers means great value for your meal. If you want a fuller hawker experience, explore the market’s other sections where fresh produce and other street food await. It's a place with a rich food culture, much loved by locals and increasingly popular among visitors discovering Singapore’s hawker heritage. Patience and an open mind will get you the best taste of Tanglin Halt’s culinary gems.

美食 @ 兀里村小贩中心 Woodleigh Village Hawker Centre
Went to dine at Woodleigh Village Hawker Centre. There are quite a few stalls which kind of tempted me to move towards them and order the foods. Tried the following food stalls: 1) Penang Man 槟城人 I was asking the stall lady for recommendation and ordered their Penang Prawn Mee (Dry) 槟城虾面 $5.50.
