Comforting mom after an episode
Seizure alert dogs can’t be trained! My mom says in her soul dog because she found me in the shelter and after only three months I started alerting her to her seizures by pestering her. I would stare 👀 and jump on her and bring her all my toys🧸 unceasingly but then not play! I thought my toys would make her feel better. 🐾
Mom taught me then to lick her hands instead when she smelled 👃funny. Then when she seized I would lay on her to make sure mom didn’t wander off (she gets confused and likes to try to move but doesn’t know where ❓ she is) or make sure her convulsions didn’t get her hurt. I licked 👅her during too to wake her up faster and remind her I was there when she woke up. She likes to say“puppy puppy“ when she seizes and that’s how I know I’m doing good.
She tries to make sure I get a biiiig treat 🦴and lots of pets when she’s awake but sometimes she’s not able to so her boyfriend does. I love mom so much I taught myself how to help and mom taught me how to help her even more 💕🐾
Seizure alert dogs play a critical role in providing support and safety for individuals with epilepsy or seizure disorders. These dogs are trained to recognize the signs of an impending seizure, offering comfort and alerting their owners or caregivers when help is needed. While training a seizure alert dog can be complex, many of these remarkable animals develop an instinctive ability to detect changes in their owner's behavior or smell prior to an episode. In addition to their alerting capabilities, seizure dogs can help protect their owners during a seizure by laying on them to prevent injury, guiding them to a safe area, or simply providing comfort through their presence. Dog owners often describe the unique bond they share, where the dog is not just a pet, but a vital partner in living with a medical condition. It's essential for anyone considering a seizure alert dog to understand the commitment involved in their training and care. Though not every dog can be a seizure alert dog, many breeds such as Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, and German Shepherds are known for their temperament and trainability. Furthermore, proper training from professional organizations dedicated to service animals can make a significant difference in the effectiveness of a seizure alert dog. The emotional support provided by these dogs is immeasurable, offering their owners not just physical help but also companionship and security. Sharing stories about the positive impacts these dogs have on their families can help raise awareness and appreciation for their incredible abilities.
