Smelly Laundry? Here’s How I Fixed Mine! ✨
I thought our laundry machine was broken a few months ago because our laundry kept smelling and did not feel as clean as usual!
I looked up ways to fix it and troubleshooted with this tips that I’ve shared! I realized I just wasn’t up on maintenance for our washer & needed to be better about what I put in the washer for cleaning!
In my head I always thought to fill up the detergent as much as possible. BUT it depends on the brand! Each has a cap of what is the correct amount to put in. So only do the top line for a full load! And other lines for how full the laundry bin is.
Also baking soda is a lifesaver and a cheap way to boost your detergent and laundry smell! And making sure your washer and washer drain is clean will boost your washers lifetime & make it run way better! 🎉

Proper laundry care starts with using the correct amount of detergent—not too much, not too little. Overusing detergent can leave residue on clothes, causing them to smell bad because excess soap doesn't rinse out fully. Follow the detergent brand’s guidelines and use only up to the top line on the detergent cap for a full load, adjusting amounts for smaller loads. Adding baking soda is a simple, cost-effective way to enhance your detergent’s cleaning power and deodorize clothes. Half a cup of baking soda per full load helps neutralize odors and soften fabrics naturally. Regular washer maintenance is essential to prevent unpleasant laundry odors. Residue, grime, and trapped moisture inside the machine and its drain can cause smells to develop over time. Clean your washing machine monthly by running a hot water cycle with two cups of white vinegar to break down buildup and sanitize the drum. If your washer lacks a cleaning cycle, simply run a normal wash on the hottest setting using vinegar. Don’t forget to inspect and clean the washer drain and drain pipe. A clogged or kinked drain can trap dirty water and cause musty smells. Keeping these components clear ensures proper drainage and helps maintain machine efficiency. Following these simple steps—correct detergent use, baking soda addition, and consistent washer cleaning—will help you enjoy fresh-smelling laundry and prolong the life of your washing machine.
