One Dark Window Book Review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Oh my gosh I could not put this book down! It was so different, but in a good way! I typically read the same kinds of fantasy type books so sometimes they can blur a bit together and feel same old same old. This book had such a refreshingly new magic system that made the book irresistible and hard to put down and the characters felt like they had so much development and were so easy to love!! 10/10, would read again!!
Okay, so you've heard my initial excitement about Rachel Gillig's 'One Dark Window,' but let's dive a little deeper into why this gothic fantasy gem completely captivated me. As someone who reads a lot of fantasy, it's rare to find a magic system that feels truly fresh and inventive, but this book really delivered. Instead of the usual elemental powers or intricate spell-casting, the magic here is tied to an ancient, eerie deck of cards and a terrifying shadow sickness. It's dark, gritty, and the consequences of using magic are genuinely chilling, which just added so much depth and tension to every single page. Beyond the magic, the world-building itself is exactly what I crave in a gothic fantasy. Think atmospheric, mist-shrouded landscapes, ancient superstitions, and a constant undercurrent of dread. The book cover, with its dark, gothic castle, perfectly captures this vibe. When I saw it on my e-reader, I knew I was in for something special – that mysterious, blurred gothic building in the background just hints at the secrets held within. It’s not just a pretty cover; it’s a promise of the dark, enchanting journey inside. And the characters! Oh my goodness, the characters. They felt incredibly real and complex. The protagonist, Elara, is such a compelling figure, burdened by a secret that makes her both vulnerable and incredibly strong. Without giving too much away, the relationships in this book are incredibly layered. If you’re a fan of the 'enemies to lovers' trope, or just enjoy dynamic, morally grey characters navigating a perilous world, you'll find plenty to love here. Their development felt earned and organic, making you root for them even when they're making difficult choices. For anyone wondering what 'One Dark Window' is truly about, it's a story of survival, hidden powers, and challenging a corrupt system, all wrapped in a rich, dark fairy-tale aesthetic. It kicks off a duology, so if you, like me, get completely hooked, there’s another book to look forward to! Whether you pick up the paperback or a deluxe edition, this is a series that deserves a spot on your shelf if you're into unique magic, dark romance, and a truly immersive gothic fantasy experience. It’s certainly not a run-of-the-mill fantasy; it's a standout that will linger with you long after you've turned the final page.
