Be slow to anger 🫶

It’s natural to feel frustrated at times; we’re all human, and emotions can get the best of us. In those heated moments, we might say things we don’t genuinely mean, which can be incredibly difficult to navigate. Acknowledging this is the first step towards being kinder to ourselves and others as we work through our feelings. When anger surges, it can lead us to speak in ways that hurt those we care about and ourselves. It’s vital to remind ourselves that experiencing these emotions is perfectly okay; what truly matters is how we respond to them. Approaching our feelings with compassion and patience can open the door to more meaningful conversations and strengthen our connections. This is why being mindful of our temper is essential—it offers us a chance for growth and understanding. Slowing down, recognizing our frustration, and listening to ourselves can help us avoid unnecessary conflicts. In turn, this fosters healthier relationships with those around us and a deeper connection with the Lord.#faith #faithexploration

... Read moreOkay, let's be real. Who hasn't felt that familiar surge of irritation over something incredibly minor? A slow driver, a misplaced item, a rude comment online – suddenly, you're fuming, and you wonder, "Why do I get so angry over little things?" I’ve been there, and it’s a struggle so many of us face. It often feels like these small annoyances hijack our entire day. But I’ve been on a journey to understand and manage this, and what I've discovered has been truly transformative. One phrase that has really resonated with me is from Proverbs 14:29 ESV: "Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly." This isn't just an ancient saying; it's a roadmap for a more peaceful life! It taught me that being "slow to anger" isn't about suppressing emotions, but about cultivating a deeper wisdom and understanding. It makes you pause and consider if the energy you're about to expend on anger is truly worth it. It’s a challenge, especially when that fiery feeling starts in your chest. So, how do we actually work on patience and anger when those small things set us off? For me, the first step is awareness. I try to catch myself right when that irritation bubbles up. Is it really the traffic, or am I just tired and stressed? Often, it's not the external event itself, but my internal state. When I feel that heat rising, I’ve found that taking a deep breath – really focusing on the inhale and exhale – can create just enough space to prevent an automatic, angry reaction. It’s like hitting a tiny reset button. I also started asking myself some "Questions to Consider," much like the prompts I encountered recently. Things like: "Will this matter in an hour? A day? A week?" and "What’s the kindest response I can offer, both to myself and to others involved?" Often, the answer is that it won't matter, and the kindest response is to let it go. This helps shift my perspective from frustration to understanding. It's a conscious effort to avoid letting a hasty temper lead me to act foolishly, as Proverbs suggests. Another technique I've found helpful for getting angry over small things is to consciously practice empathy. Sometimes, the other person might be going through something I know nothing about. Or maybe, my reaction is disproportionate because I'm carrying other burdens. It’s about not taking everything personally and realizing that most people aren't deliberately trying to upset you. Finally, for those who share my faith journey, turning to prayer has been a powerful tool. Asking for help to keep perspective, to remember that small things aren't worth my peace, and to control my emotions, brings a sense of calm and guidance. It’s a reminder that I don’t have to tackle this alone. Being "slow to anger" is a daily practice, not a destination. But with these strategies and a little faith, I'm finding more peace and truly believe it's helping me cultivate that "great understanding" in my life.
