Coronado
Thinking about a getaway to that beautiful island off San Diego? My last visit to Coronado Island was absolutely magical, and I can't wait to share my top tips for making the most of your San Diego island adventure! It’s truly one of the best day trips you can take from the city, offering a unique blend of relaxation and fun. First off, getting there is part of the experience. You can drive across the iconic Coronado Bridge, which offers breathtaking views of the San Diego skyline and the bay. Or, for a more charming approach, hop on the Coronado Ferry from downtown San Diego. I love the ferry ride – it’s a refreshing way to start and end the day, and you get some fantastic photo opportunities of the city from the water. Once you arrive, you’ll immediately feel the island’s relaxed, upscale vibe. Undoubtedly, one of the main Coronado Island activities is spending time at Coronado Beach. The sand here literally sparkles due to mica deposits, and it’s consistently ranked among America's best beaches. I always make a beeline for the area around the historic Hotel del Coronado. Even if you're not staying there, walking through the grounds and admiring its Victorian architecture is a treat. I love setting up my towel, digging my toes into the soft sand, and just watching the waves. It’s perfect for families building sandcastles or anyone just wanting to unwind. Beyond the beach, renting a bike is a fantastic way to explore the island. There are several rental shops near the Ferry Landing and along Orange Avenue. I once rented an electric bike and cycled along the scenic bayside path, past million-dollar homes, and through charming neighborhoods. You can also bike down Orange Avenue, the island's main street, which is lined with unique boutiques, art galleries, and cafes. It’s a great way to see the local shops and grab a coffee or ice cream. Speaking of food, don't miss the Ferry Landing Marketplace for a casual bite with stunning views of the San Diego skyline – I particularly love watching the sailboats glide by while enjoying lunch. For a change of pace, consider exploring the tide pools near Coronado’s North Beach during low tide. It’s a wonderful, educational activity, especially if you have kids, to discover sea anemones and small crabs. And if you're looking for a quieter spot away from the main beach crowds, I recommend venturing towards the north end of the island. Every time I visit Coronado, I discover something new, making it an endlessly appealing San Diego island escape. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, adventure, or just a picturesque stroll, Coronado has it all for an unforgettable day trip.
