Soluble or Insoluble🧐

Solubility is closely linked to bonding. There are four simple steps to follow to determine solubility:

👉 Identify the bonding and intermolecular forces (IMFs) within the solute.

👉 Identify the bonding and IMFs within the solvent.

👉 Identify the types of interactions between solute and solvent.

👉 Compare the strengths of those interactions.

⭐ In short: “like dissolves like.” Simple molecules that share similar intermolecular forces are more likely to dissolve in one another.

... Read moreWhen learning about solubility, I realized it’s important to consider not just the types of intermolecular forces (IMFs) but also the energy changes involved during dissolution. For instance, to know if a solute dissolves, you should compare the energy needed to break the solute-solute and solvent-solvent interactions with the energy released when new solute-solvent interactions form. A practical example I found interesting is iodine's solubility behavior. Iodine molecules interact with each other through instantaneous dipole-induced dipole forces (id-id), which are relatively weak. Hexane molecules also have similar id-id forces. This similarity means when iodine dissolves in hexane, the energy released from forming solute-solvent interactions compensates well for the energy needed to break original bonds, making iodine soluble in hexane. On the other hand, water molecules form strong hydrogen bonds. Since iodine's id-id forces do not match water's strong hydrogen bonding, the solute-solvent interaction between iodine and water is weaker than the original water-water interactions. So, the energy released isn’t enough to overcome the strong hydrogen bonds, resulting in iodine being insoluble in water. This understanding highlights the general rule of "like dissolves like"—substances with similar bonding and intermolecular forces tend to mix well. In practice, considering these steps helped me predict solubility for various substances beyond textbook examples. When studying solutions or preparing experimental protocols, remembering how to identify and compare IMFs can guide expectations on solubility. This approach not only builds conceptual clarity but also supports laboratory success and deeper comprehension of chemical interactions.
