One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in my personal journey is trying to stay positive and supportive when some people around me struggle with their own issues. I often find myself encouraging those who feel low by hyping them up and helping them believe in themselves. It’s fulfilling to be a good friend who brings out the best in others, but sometimes, the negativity from others can affect my own mindset. What I've learned over time is that while it’s wonderful to inspire and uplift your social circle, it’s equally important to set personal boundaries and protect your mental state. Negative people often project their insecurities onto others, making you feel smaller or less confident than you actually are. This can be draining if you don’t have a supportive network. A valuable piece of advice my grandmother shared is to "count all your friends on your fingers, but don’t count all the fingers." Essentially, this means cherish your true friends deeply and be cautious about who you allow into your inner circle. Quality over quantity is key when it comes to friendships and relationships. In alternative communities, such as those embracing tattoos and piercings, or people who identify as "alternative girls," authenticity is prized. Surrounding yourself with people who accept and support your true self can make a huge difference in maintaining your confidence and mental peace. For anyone struggling in a similar situation, consider these tips: maintain a circle of genuine friends, avoid emotional energy drainers, and remember that being "nice" doesn’t mean sacrificing your own emotional health. Also, it’s okay to walk away from relationships that make you feel less than you deserve. In conclusion, self-care and self-respect go hand in hand with being a positive force for others. By balancing empathy with boundaries, you can create a social environment where everyone—including yourself—can thrive emotionally.
