Starting out in horse riding can be both exciting and overwhelming, but understanding the basics truly helps build confidence. One of the first things I learned was the importance of the posting trot, also called rising trot. Lifting yourself gently out of the saddle on the correct diagonal is key—not only does it help your horse’s spine, but it also makes the ride smoother for both of you. A tip is to remember that when your outside leg is back, you should be sitting; this ensures you’re on the correct diagonal. Another crucial skill you’ll need early on is mastering canter leads. The correct lead means your inside leg takes the bigger stride while the outside leg supports by pushing it out. Counting your strides becomes especially useful later when you start jumping since timing your takeoff is essential. Don’t be discouraged if you find yourself on the wrong lead at first—it’s a common step in learning. Holding your reins might seem straightforward, but there’s a technique to it that can improve your grip and control. Keeping your hands open with the rein securely wrapped around your pinky finger gives you better stability without causing tension to your horse’s mouth. It took me some practice to get comfortable with this grip. Lastly, the 2-point position is a game changer, especially as you progress to jumping. It lifts your weight off the horse’s back, freeing their movement and making jumps easier. This position also helps your balance and reduces strain, making riding more enjoyable for both horse and rider.
