🎯 The 6-Second Heart Stopper: Adenosine 101
👩⚕️💉 Ever seen a medication literally stop a heart…on purpose?
Let’s talk Adenosine, the go-to drug for supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) when your patient’s heart is racing over 150 beats per minute.
✨ How it Works:
Adenosine hits the AV node like a slam dunk blocking electrical conduction just long enough to reset the rhythm. Think of it as pressing CTRL + ALT + DELETE on the heart.
✅ Fast Facts:
• Half-life? Less than 10 seconds.
• Dose? 6 mg rapid IV push. No luck? Push 12 mg.
• Follow with a 20 mL flush.
• Raise the arm immediately!
💡 Pro Tip: Always warn the patient: You might feel like you’re about to die for a few seconds but you won’t. That sense of impending doom is totally normal.
⚠️ Side Effects:
• Transient asystole (the heart stops briefly yes, really)
• Chest pain
• Flushing
• Shortness of breath
🎓 NCLEX Nuggets:
• Always place defibrillator pads just in case.
• Never give to patients with 2nd or 3rd-degree heart block.
• Capture that before-and-after EKG!
