Growing Peppers in the Greenstalk.

Columbus
2025/6/28 Edited to

... Read moreI never thought I could grow so many peppers in my small backyard, but discovering vertical gardening, especially with my Greenstalk, has been a total game-changer! If you're like me and dreaming of a bountiful pepper harvest but are short on space, growing peppers vertically is absolutely the way to go. It's not just about saving room; it also makes tending to your plants and harvesting so much easier on your back! When I first decided to try growing peppers vertically, I wasn't sure where to start. The Greenstalk caught my eye because of its unique stacking design and efficient watering system. It's perfect for peppers because each tier gets its own pocket, allowing the roots plenty of room without competing too much. But even if you don't have a Greenstalk, the principles apply to other vertical planters or DIY setups like pallet gardens or trellises. Choosing the right pepper varieties is key for vertical success. I've found that compact, determinate varieties work best. Think smaller bell peppers, jalapeños, serranos, or even some compact sweet peppers. Bushier, indeterminate types can get a bit unwieldy and might need more aggressive pruning or support. I love growing several different types in my Greenstalk, one in each pocket, and it’s amazing how many I can fit! Once you've got your vertical planter, good soil is non-negotiable. I use a high-quality potting mix with plenty of organic matter to keep my peppers happy and well-fed. When planting, I carefully tuck each seedling into its designated pocket, ensuring the root ball is settled. For watering, my Greenstalk makes it super simple – I just fill the top reservoir, and the water slowly drips down to each level. If you're using a different vertical system, make sure to water evenly and deeply, as vertical gardens can dry out faster than in-ground beds. Peppers are hungry plants, so consistent feeding is crucial. I usually start with a balanced fertilizer when the plants are young, then switch to something a bit higher in phosphorus and potassium once they start flowering and setting fruit. Remember to read your fertilizer's instructions! And don't forget the sun – peppers absolutely love heat and sun, so position your vertical garden where it will get at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. If you have a rotating vertical system like some Greenstalk models, make sure to turn it occasionally so all sides get their fair share of light. Keeping an eye out for pests and diseases is still important, even in a vertical setup. I find it easier to spot issues when my plants are at eye level. A quick spray with neem oil or insecticidal soap usually takes care of any unwelcome visitors. Supporting your pepper plants might still be necessary, especially as they get laden with fruit. Small stakes or even gentle ties can prevent branches from breaking under the weight of a heavy harvest. The best part? Harvesting! With peppers growing at different levels, it’s a joy to pick ripe fruits without bending over too much. I constantly check my plants, snipping off peppers as soon as they reach their mature size and color. This encourages the plant to produce even more. Truly, growing peppers vertically has transformed my gardening experience, making it more efficient and incredibly rewarding. Give it a try – you might just find your new favorite way to grow!

Planting lemon balm in my GreenStalk 🌿💚
If you’ve never grown it before treat it like mint 👀 it spreads FAST and can take over your garden if you’re not careful. That’s why I prefer growing it in a container to keep it under control. Make sure you’re harvesting it often and don’t let it go to seed unless you want lemon balm everywhere 🌱
