POV: having a rude manager.

Been in this job for 6 months now and I’ve been wanting to quit for a while. Only thing pushing forward is God and the fact that I would love to work at a hospital pharmacy but I need at least 1 year of experience🥲 what do you guys think about these messages and you guys can’t imagine what is like working with him either. Should I do a story time?

... Read moreHAVING A RUDE MANAGER ISN'T FOR THE WEAK," and I can definitely attest to that. It feels like every day is a battle when you're dealing with a boss who constantly crosses professional boundaries. My own experience, as you might have seen from the initial texts, has been a rollercoaster of frustration, from unreasonable demands to outright threats. It’s a situation many of us unfortunately find ourselves in, whether it’s a weak manager who avoids responsibility or someone actively rude management that creates a toxic environment. If you're wondering how to deal with rude managers, you're not alone. I've been trying to figure it out myself, and here’s what I've learned (or am learning) from tough situations, including those where my manager implies they "can just hire new people" or demands I come in "in writing." First, document everything. This is crucial. I've learned the hard way that when a manager is consistently unfair or demanding, having a record of these interactions can be your best defense. Keep screenshots of text messages, save emails, and jot down notes after phone calls or in-person conversations. Note the date, time, and specific details. For instance, when my manager told me, "You can give me that in writing" regarding closing alone, or when they tried to persuade me to stay until 9:30 pm despite my Friday morning shift refusal, I made sure to save those messages. These records can be invaluable if you ever need to escalate the issue to HR or, as I once considered, "corporate." Second, set clear boundaries. This is easier said than done, especially when facing a rude manager who pressures you with seniority rules for days off or demands you cover last-minute shifts. I've struggled with this, like when I initially declined a shift but still ended up going in. Try to be firm but professional. If a request is unreasonable or outside your job description, it's okay to say no, or to propose an alternative that works for both you and the company. Remember, your personal time and well-being are important. A toxic boss often thrives on pushing boundaries, so you need to be the one to re-establish them. Third, seek support, even if it's just for venting. Talking to trusted colleagues, friends, or family about your work struggles can provide much-needed relief and perspective. Sometimes, just knowing you're not the only one dealing with an unfair manager can make a huge difference. If your workplace has an HR department, understand their role and when it might be appropriate to approach them. Be prepared with your documented evidence if you do. I've heard stories where HR intervention has helped, but also where it hasn't, so gauge your workplace culture carefully. Finally, focus on your long-term goals. For me, it’s about getting that year of experience to work in a hospital pharmacy. This goal is what keeps me going on days when I feel completely defeated by the rude management. Remind yourself why you're in this particular job and what you aim to achieve. Use the negative experience as fuel to work towards something better. Sometimes, enduring a difficult situation is a stepping stone to a more fulfilling career. Dealing with a weak manager or a toxic boss is mentally exhausting. Remember to prioritize your mental health, practice self-care, and know that you deserve a respectful work environment. If the situation becomes unbearable and impacts your health, it might be time to seriously consider other options, even if it means adjusting your timeline. Your well-being is worth more than any job.
