Why is Band such a Boys Club?

In honor of Women’s History Month, we remember the persistence and resilience of the women who came before us in musical arts.

In our latest Substack article, we explore:

• The history of women in instrumental music and conducting

• How gender stereotypes shaped band culture

• Why representation and organizational choices still matter today

• What meaningful change in the marching arts could look like

And most importantly: why every woman who steps onto the field, the podium, or the rehearsal room floor helps reshape the future of this activity!

... Read moreAs someone passionate about music and gender equity, I’ve often reflected on why bands have historically been dominated by men. From personal experience and historical research, it’s clear that longstanding stereotypes deeply influenced who was accepted in various instrumental roles. The flute’s acceptance as a women’s instrument, largely due to its perceived elegance and non-obstructive nature, highlights how expectations about appearance and gender roles affected instrument choices for women. Brass instruments, associated with strength and loudness, were often deemed inappropriate for women, reinforcing exclusion from many band sections. During World War I, women stepped into roles traditionally held by men, including positions in professional music ensembles. However, once men returned from war, women were often pushed out, leading to the rise of all-female ensembles as safe spaces for performance. This pattern of temporary inclusion followed by exclusion has influenced the culture of marching bands, which historically claimed women couldn’t meet the physical demands or maintain the uniform look required. These reasons masked deeper biases about gender and ability. What has been most inspiring in recent years is seeing more women bravely step onto the field, podium, or rehearsal space, challenging these old notions. Their presence is not only reshaping the culture but creating representation that young girls can look up to, fueling a cycle of increased inclusion. Organizational changes, such as promoting female band directors and encouraging equitable policies, play a crucial role in supporting this progress. Having witnessed all-female ensembles transform into competitive and high-profile groups myself, I can attest to the impact of visibility and support. Meaningful change requires confronting both systemic barriers and everyday microaggressions in band culture. By celebrating women’s resilience in the marching arts and fighting for equal opportunities, we can ensure a more diverse and enriching future for all who love band music.
