It’s Earth Day

This Earth Day we are unfortunately reminded how much climate change is already showing up on our fields, and with drum corps season right around the corner, this summer is shaping up to be another brutal one. 🌍

Climate change is showing up in the marching arts in real ways, and performers need staff and admin to be fully prepared to keep them safe. We put together a guide to help you and your people stay safe through the heat, from hydration to recognizing heat illness before it becomes an emergency.

Staff and admin: protect your students. Performers: advocate for yourselves and each other in this summer’s heat.

... Read moreAs a long-time participant in marching arts, I've witnessed firsthand how extreme heat not only challenges performers physically but also demands proactive safety measures from staff and admin. This year, with climate change accelerating, summers are becoming increasingly brutal with temperatures soaring well above 100°F late into the evening and UV radiation reaching dangerous levels. It's crucial for all involved to understand the signs of heat illness early—symptoms like dizziness, excessive sweating followed by hot and dry skin, nausea, and cramps shouldn't be ignored. Proper hydration is non-negotiable; water alone sometimes isn't enough during intense physical activity under the sun. Incorporating electrolyte drinks can help maintain the body's balance. Additionally, frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas are vital whenever possible. UV protection goes beyond just sunscreen application. Given that UV levels can hit 8 or above, which signifies high to extreme exposure, performers should wear UV-protective clothing and hats during practice and performances when suitable. I personally found that reapplying sunscreen every two hours, especially after sweating heavily, is essential for effective protection. Administrators should implement heat action plans tailored to their local climate patterns. Recent extreme winter weather often predicts harsh summer conditions, which means early preparation is key. I recommend monitoring local temperature and UV index forecasts daily during the marching season. Exercising flexibility with rehearsal schedules—opting for early morning or late evening sessions—can also mitigate heat risks. Finally, performers should feel empowered to advocate for themselves and their peers. Communication channels must be open so that anyone feeling unwell can seek immediate assistance without hesitation. These combined strategies create a safer environment, ensuring the marching arts community can continue thriving despite climate challenges.
