Autism Acceptance in the Marching Arts

Too many autistic performers move through this activity unsupported and valued only for what they produce on the field, not for who they are.

MAASIN Member Sam Chase shares her experience moving through drum corps and marching band as an autistic person, and what she wishes the people around her had understood sooner.

... Read moreFrom my own experience participating in marching band, I've realized that clear communication and understanding are crucial for supporting autistic performers. One important aspect is providing detailed guidelines and expectations upfront—much like the 30-page Band Handbook mentioned—which helped me feel more confident and included. Knowing the 'script' gave me a structure where I could thrive without feeling overwhelmed by unpredictability. However, acceptance is more than just rules and structure. It’s about recognizing autistic performers as whole individuals rather than valuing them solely for their output on the field. In many programs, I noticed a heavy focus on perfection and performance outcomes, which created pressure and sometimes masked genuine struggles. What helped me most was when coaches and peers acknowledged my unique needs and encouraged me to express myself authentically, even if it meant going off-script occasionally. Supporting neurodiverse students also means fostering a culture where they feel seen and safe. For example, some sensory-friendly accommodations—like allowing noise-cancelling headphones during long rehearsals or providing quiet spaces for breaks—can make a huge difference in their well-being and performance. It’s vital that these accommodations are individualized since autism manifests differently in each person. Ultimately, marching arts communities benefit greatly from embracing neurodiversity through empathy and flexibility. By prioritizing the person first and their performance second, programs can create inclusive environments where all members flourish. Sharing stories openly, like those from MAASIN Network, builds awareness and encourages others to advocate for acceptance, ensuring future performers never feel unseen or unsupported.

Let’s get real close and personal for a second. I’m an adult who has high functioning autism (commonly known as ASD). Many people tend to look at me and disregard the idea simply because of how I’ve chosen to present myself or mask. Which is a widely different conversation in itself. As a ch

AUTISM AWARENESS VS ACCEPTANCE
Autism awareness teaches us what autism is. Autism acceptance shows us how to support people. True inclusion happens when knowledge turns into action, accommodations, and respect. Awareness is knowing. Acceptance is action. #autism #autismacceptance
