Guess how far I actually got
Wanted to spend a sunny day reading outside and trying to finish my book for book club and let’s just say it didn’t get too far…
Oh my goodness, I totally get it! We've all been there, haven't we? You set out with the best intentions, ready to conquer your reading list – especially when it's a highly anticipated book like 'From Blood and Ash' and a book club deadline is looming. My plan was simple: a sunny day, my book, and some peace and quiet in the fresh air. I envisioned myself breezing through chapters, making significant progress towards Sunday's discussion. But as my post showed, sometimes life just happens, and those serene reading moments become an adventure in distraction! It got me thinking, how do you all manage to stay genuinely focused when you're trying to read, especially outdoors? I mean, first it was the sheer beauty of the sunny weather pulling me away, making me want to just soak it all in. Then, an unexpected need for a quick grocery run popped into my head, which turned into a mini-adventure of its own. And, of course, making myself a yummy, well-deserved lunch of wraps, sliced cucumbers, and crackers seemed like the perfect break... which then turned into a long break. Honestly, even spotting a tiny bumblebee buzzing around a bright yellow dandelion can completely derail my concentration! It's frustrating when you look down and realize you're still only on page 25, and you feel like you've done everything but read the actual book. I've been trying to figure out some practical hacks to actually finish books on time, especially with book club commitments. One thing I'm definitely going to try next time is setting a timer for focused reading blocks, maybe 30 or 45 minutes at a time, followed by a short, guilt-free break. That way, if I get distracted, it's during the designated break, not in the middle of a crucial chapter! Another idea, especially for outdoor reading, is creating a dedicated 'reading nook' that's truly distraction-free. Even if it's just a comfy blanket under a quiet tree, away from the main foot traffic or potential bee sightings, minimizing external stimuli could make a huge difference. For those persistent book club deadlines, I've heard some amazing tips. Some friends swear by buddy-reading, where you check in with a friend who's reading the same book to keep each other accountable. Others find success by listening to the audiobook version while doing chores or commuting, which helps cover more ground when physical reading time is scarce. What are your go-to strategies when you're struggling to finish a book, whether it's for leisure or a deadline? Do you power through with sheer willpower, or do you, like me, sometimes just let the day take you where it may, finding joy in the detours? Sometimes, it's perfectly okay to just enjoy the moment and the unplanned adventures, even if it means your book club discussion might involve a bit more creative interpretation or asking a friend for a quick recap! But for those days we really do want to finish that book, having a few tricks up our sleeves can't hurt. Would love to hear your experiences and any clever ways you tackle this common reader's dilemma. Maybe together we can conquer our TBR piles and still enjoy those sunny, bee-filled afternoons!
