I love the fall, it’s my favorite season. But fall is also the gateway to when my depression is at its worst. So here are some things I will be doing this fall to help alleviate some of that.
Get outside- touch grass, get birds, feel the wind
Do fun stuff!- pick apples, solve mazes, indulge in fairs
Self care time- face masks, art nights, coffee dates
Courses- learning, taking notes, library study days
No more shrinking- new recipes, no scale, seasonal produce
What are some things that help you get through the funk of the fall?
... Read moreAs the leaves change and the air cools, I know I'm not alone in feeling that familiar shift in energy. While fall is beautiful, it can also be a tough time for mental well-being, leading many of us to seek out what I call 'cozy healing.' It's all about finding comfort and taking intentional steps to nurture your mind and body during this transitional season. If you're looking for ways to truly embrace the season and combat those autumnal blues, here are some deeper dives into practices that have helped me.
First, let's talk about the transformative power of nature. When I say 'get outside,' I mean truly immerse yourself. It's not just about a quick walk; it’s about engaging your senses. I love finding a quiet trail, bundling up with my favorite scarf, and bringing along a warm drink in my Stanley mug. The crisp air, the rustling leaves, the earthy scent – it all helps ground me. Try mindful walking, where you pay attention to every step, every sound. It’s amazing how a simple hour outdoors can clear your head and reduce anxiety, making you feel more connected and less isolated.
Next, do the fun things that spark joy, even if it feels like a chore initially. Fall is packed with unique opportunities for lighthearted fun. While apple picking and corn mazes are classics, don't underestimate the simple delights. I adore driving around just to see Halloween inflatables and decorated houses – it brings out a childlike wonder. Or, challenge yourself to a new fall recipe, like pumpkin bread or a hearty soup. These small acts of fun create positive memories and give you something to look forward to, breaking the monotony that can sometimes accompany seasonal mood shifts. It’s about consciously seeking out moments of glee.
Making time for me is non-negotiable. Self-care isn't selfish; it's essential for cozy healing. Beyond face masks and coffee dates, consider creating a designated 'cozy corner' in your home – a spot with soft blankets, good lighting, and a few plants, almost like your own personal cozy cafe interior. This is where I retreat for art nights, journaling, or simply reading a good book. If you're an animal lover, spending time with furry friends, maybe even volunteering at a local shelter with small goats or puppies, can be incredibly therapeutic. The unconditional love and presence of animals are powerful healers.
Expanding my knowledge has been surprisingly effective in my journey. There’s something incredibly comforting about learning something new, especially when the weather outside is gloomy. Utilizing my local library for quiet study days, or signing up for free online courses, gives me a sense of purpose and accomplishment. It shifts my focus from internal struggles to external growth, boosting my confidence and providing a healthy distraction. It’s not just about professional development; it's about stimulating your mind and adding new dimensions to your life, which is a profound form of self-care.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, is the mindset shift to stop trying to shrink. Fall brings an abundance of comforting, hearty seasonal food, and it's crucial to enjoy it without guilt. I've personally put away the scale and focused on intuitive eating. Indulge in those delicious pumpkins and root vegetables, savoring the flavors and nourishing your body. This isn't just about food; it's about body positivity and accepting yourself as you are. When we stop fighting our bodies and instead nurture them with kindness and delicious, wholesome food, our minds feel lighter and more at peace. This holistic approach is truly at the heart of finding your personal 'cozy healing' this fall.
I always try to find as many activities going on in my area during the fall as I can. There are usually a lot of little things I would have never thought of and its such a great way to get the most out of such a pleasant season
