Camping as a College Student

Going camping while in college might seem like a dream that’s just out of reach, especially when every dollar counts. But trust me, it’s totally doable and can be one of the most memorable experiences you’ll have with your friends! After my recent adventure to the incredible Redwoods, I wanted to share even more practical tips to help you plan your own epic, budget-friendly college camping trip. One of the biggest money-savers is definitely food. Instead of splurging on restaurant meals, we planned our 'Groceries' carefully. Think about easy, hearty meals you can cook over a campfire or on a portable stove. We stocked up on essentials like eggs for a 'Homemade Breakfast' (so much cheaper than diner food!), bacon, and ingredients for sandwiches for a 'Lunch Break' on the go. Pre-chopping veggies at home saves time and hassle. Don't forget easy-to-pack snacks like granola bars or fruit! It makes a huge difference in your overall trip cost. Finding cheap campsites is absolutely key to a successful college camping trip. Apps like AllTrails, Hipcamp, or simply searching national/state park websites (like for the 'Redwoods National Park' we visited!) can reveal fantastic, affordable spots. Sometimes, dispersed camping on public lands is even free, just be sure to check local regulations and practice Leave No Trace principles. Booking in advance, especially for popular spots, can also lock in better rates. Remember, the goal is to 'Set up Camp' without breaking the bank, so do your research! Once you're there, the best activities are often free! Hiking and exploring nature is an absolute must. We spent hours discovering breathtaking spots like the 'Hidden Beach Hike' and adventuring along the 'Smith River'. Pack a frisbee, a deck of cards, or simply enjoy stargazing – away from city lights, the night sky is truly spectacular. These moments are priceless and cost absolutely nothing. Don't have all the gear? Neither did we! Ask friends if you can borrow tents, sleeping bags, or cooking supplies. Many universities also have outdoor recreation centers where you can rent gear cheaply. Carpooling is another huge money-saver – split gas costs with your friends. It’s all about being resourceful and collaborative. Always share your itinerary with someone not on the trip, and be aware of wildlife and weather conditions. Pack a first-aid kit and know basic wilderness safety. Having a loose plan for each day, but also allowing for spontaneity, makes for the best trips. Before you know it, you'll be 'Heading Home' with incredible stories and memories, without maxing out your student loan.
