in case you needed the reminder 🫶🏼
I've learned over time that constantly moving the goalpost can seriously harm your mental well-being. The phrase "stop moving the goalpost" really resonates because it highlights the tendency many have to shift expectations just as they’re about to reach a milestone. This habit often leaves us feeling unsatisfied, as if we're chasing something that’s always just out of reach. One key insight I've found helpful is to focus on what genuinely brings positive feelings, rather than chasing abstract outcomes. The OCR phrase "you want the feeling that you THINK that thing is going to bring you" perfectly captures this. It means sometimes we fixate on a specific achievement, hoping it will deliver happiness, but what we really crave is the emotional state that we associate with that achievement. If we can identify and cultivate that feeling directly, rather than constantly resetting our targets, it can drastically improve our overall happiness. In my own experience, this has meant taking a step back and practicing gratitude for what I have rather than always striving for the next thing. It’s helped reduce anxiety and has improved my mental health tremendously. Embracing this reminder helped me appreciate the journey and the progress I make, instead of feeling pressured to meet ever-changing goals. Being mindful of these patterns and intentionally aligning your goals with your emotional needs can create a healthier mindset. Remember, mental health matters, and sometimes the best way to care for it is by honoring your true feelings and not letting the goalposts move without purpose.
