Theme: God’s Providence and Favor in the Midst of Faithfulness

Ruth 2 is a beautiful chapter that highlights God’s provision and the reward of faithfulness. It shows how Ruth’s obedience and humility led her to Boaz’s field, where God’s plan for her life began unfolding.

I. Introduction: Ruth’s Step of Faith (Ruth 2:1-3)

Key Verse: “And she went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.” (Ruth 2:3)

1. Ruth Takes Initiative (v. 2)

• Ruth asks Naomi for permission to go and glean in the fields.

• Even though she was a foreigner and could have let fear stop her, she stepped out in faith to provide for Naomi.

• Lesson: God blesses those who are willing to work and take steps of faith.

2. Divine Providence (v. 3)

• The phrase “her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz” may seem like coincidence, but it was God’s plan all along.

• God directed her steps, even when she didn’t realize it.

• Lesson: Nothing in life is random—God is always guiding His people.

II. Boaz’s Kindness and God’s Favor (Ruth 2:4-16)

Key Verse: “The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.” (Ruth 2:12)

1. Boaz Notices Ruth (vv. 4-7)

• Boaz, a wealthy and respected man, greets his workers with “The Lord be with you”—showing that he was a God-honoring man.

• He notices Ruth and asks about her. His servant describes her humble, hardworking attitude.

• Lesson: When we are faithful in small things, people take notice—and more importantly, God takes notice.

2. Boaz Extends Protection and Provision (vv. 8-10)

• Boaz tells Ruth to stay in his field, drink water freely, and work alongside his servant girls—things he didn’t have to do.

• Ruth humbly asks why she, a foreigner, has found such grace.

• Lesson: God’s favor is not about who we are, but who He is.

3. The Blessing of Obedience (vv. 11-16)

• Boaz tells Ruth that he knows of her kindness to Naomi and her faith in God (v. 11).

• He prays that God will reward her (v. 12).

• Boaz doesn’t just pray—he becomes part of God’s provision, giving Ruth extra food and making sure she is treated well.

• Lesson: God works through people to bless others. We should seek to be a Boaz in someone’s life.

III. Naomi Recognizes God’s Hand (Ruth 2:17-23)

Key Verse: “Blessed be he of the Lord, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead.” (Ruth 2:20)

1. Ruth Brings Home Abundance (vv. 17-18)

• Ruth gathers about an ephah (30-50 pounds) of grain—a large amount for one day’s work!

• She brings it home to Naomi, showing her generous and selfless heart.

• Lesson: When God provides, He often does so abundantly.

2. Naomi’s Joy and Hope is Restored (vv. 19-22)

• Naomi, who once called herself Mara (bitter), now sees God’s faithfulness.

• She realizes that Boaz is a kinsman-redeemer, someone who can legally help restore their family.

• Lesson: Even in seasons of loss, God is working behind the scenes to bring restoration.

IV. Application: How Can We Apply Ruth 2 to Our Lives?

✅ Step Out in Faith – Like Ruth, we must take steps of obedience even when we don’t know how things will turn out.

✅ God Sees Hard Work and Faithfulness – We may feel unnoticed, but God rewards those who walk in integrity.

✅ God’s Blessings Often Come Through Others – Just as Boaz blessed Ruth, God may use us to be a blessing to someone in need.

✅ Trust in Divine Appointments – What looks like “coincidence” is often God’s plan unfolding.

✅ God Can Restore What Was Lost – Naomi’s story reminds us that God is a Redeemer who can turn sorrow into joy.

Final Thought:

Ruth 2 reminds us that even in difficult times, God provides. He sees our faithfulness, places the right people in our lives, and works things out for His glory and our good. Will I trust Him to guide my steps today?
