A sprinkle of *toxic* positivity

When I first got into my healing journey I was borderline afraid to acknowledge my negative feelings thoughts and emotions feeling like it was going to bring bad things in my life or something not allowing myself to get frustrated or upset bc of the state of the world but it’s okay to express your feelings I’m learning the difference between feeling and letting go and holding on to these things that are not the best letting myself feel without shame for feeling and then letting it go life is fucking hard and living in a capitalist nightmare doesn’t make it easy I can a knowledge all sides of life the beauty and the bad shit I allow myself to be upset shamelessly being in a bad mood won’t ruin your life it’s when you allow the bad mood to over take everything cry it out and keep it pushing bby #embracevulnerability

... Read moreYou know, for the longest time, I thought being positive all the time was the key to a happy life. Every time I felt sad, angry, or frustrated, there was this little voice (or sometimes a not-so-little external voice!) telling me to 'just look on the bright side' or 'good vibes only.' This, my friends, is essentially the heart of toxic positivity. It's the excessive and ineffective overgeneralization of a happy and optimistic state across all situations. It’s when someone dismisses genuine feelings of distress by saying things like, "Everything happens for a reason," or "Just be grateful." While well-intentioned, it often does more harm than good because it implies that negative emotions are inherently bad or should be suppressed. I’ve personally experienced the pressure of this mindset, especially during challenging times. I remember one particularly stressful period, almost like a chaotic 'Moving day' – so many things were up in the air, and frankly, life sucks sometimes, right? Instead of allowing myself to feel overwhelmed, I’d try to force a smile, telling myself I should be positive. But all that did was make me feel guilty for my very real emotions, leading to a deeper sense of isolation and misunderstanding. It's like being denied the right to process your own experience. The true meaning of toxic positivity isn't about being genuinely optimistic, which is a wonderful trait. It's about denying the validity of others' (or your own) legitimate emotional experiences. It creates an environment where vulnerability is discouraged, and people feel they can't share their struggles without being met with platitudes instead of empathy. This can actually hinder healing and personal growth because we can't address problems we refuse to acknowledge. So, how do we navigate this? First, by recognizing it. When you or someone else is going through a tough time, look out for phrases that dismiss or minimize pain. Instead of saying, "Don't be sad," try, "It's okay to feel sad right now." Instead of "Just focus on the good," try "I'm here for you, whatever you're feeling." For myself, I've learned to validate my own feelings first. It’s about creating space for all emotions – the joy, the anger, the sadness, the frustration. They are all messengers, and suppressing them only delays their message. Embracing vulnerability means allowing yourself to feel the full spectrum of human experience without judgment, and understanding that it's in acknowledging the 'bad stuff' that we often find our deepest strengths and paths to genuine healing.
