TransTalk - Get to know me

It’s truly incredible to look back and trace the very first threads of who I am today. When I mention knowing I was different around age five, it wasn't a fully formed understanding of gender identity, but rather a deep, undeniable feeling that something inside me didn't align with the expectations placed upon me. I remember gravitating towards things typically labeled "feminine" and feeling a profound sense of peace and rightness when I could secretly explore them. It was a confusing time for a child; there was no language for what I felt, and certainly no visible role models in my world. The societal norms of the time were rigid, and I quickly learned to hide these feelings, tucking them away like a secret treasure, or perhaps, a burden. As I grew older, this internal exploration continued, often in solitude. I might try on clothes or experiment with different mannerisms when no one was around, always feeling a surge of authentic joy mixed with a pang of fear. The world outside offered no space for these feelings, so I learned to perform, to present a version of myself that was expected. This "pretending" became a heavy weight, although it also taught me resilience. For many years, I believed I was alone in this experience. It wasn’t until my early adulthood that the internet started connecting people in new ways, and I began to cautiously seek out stories that echoed my own. Discovering others who shared similar hidden lives was like finding an oasis in a vast desert. Meeting other transgender individuals was a pivotal moment. Hearing their stories, understanding the terminology, and realizing that there was a path forward—a way to truly become myself—was transformative. It gave me the courage to confront the pretending I'd been doing for decades. In 1999, something clicked. I remember thinking, "Enough is enough." The need to live authentically finally outweighed the fear of the unknown. That decision was not made lightly, but it was made with an overwhelming sense of hope and clarity. It marked the true beginning of my journey as an MTF trans woman, a journey that has unfolded beautifully over the years. Transitioning later in life, particularly in my 50s, presented its own unique set of challenges and profound rewards. There were medical aspects to navigate, sometimes with doctors who were still learning about transgender care themselves. Socially, it meant coming out to family, friends, and colleagues who had known me in a different light for so long. Some relationships shifted, some grew stronger, and some, unfortunately, faded. But through it all, the overwhelming feeling was one of liberation. I learned that it's never too late to live your truth. The wisdom and self-awareness gained from decades of life, combined with the newfound freedom of authenticity, allowed me to approach my transition with a clarity and confidence I might not have had at a younger age. Today, as a smiling transgender woman, I embrace every part of my journey. The joy of finally seeing myself reflected in my appearance—perhaps with blonde hair and a touch of pink lipstick, wearing a favorite top and a meaningful necklace—is indescribable. It's not just about outward presentation; it's about the internal peace that comes from alignment between who I am and how I live in the world. My hope with these "Trans Talks" is to share experiences, offer support, and show that being a trans woman is a beautiful, diverse, and deeply personal journey. It’s about finding your authentic self, no matter when or how that revelation comes, and living it proudly.
