... Read moreGrowing up with unrestricted internet access was a fascinating and eye-opening experience. Unlike today's heavily curated and filtered web, the early internet was truly like the Wild West—a place full of uncharted territories and limitless possibilities. I remember dial-up connections, the excitement of discovering new websites, and the thrill of stumbling upon unexpected content that you couldn't find anywhere else. One vivid part of my early internet experience involved my search for art inspiration, especially related to my favorite childhood interests like Pokémon. The internet offered a vast gallery of fan art and creative expressions, some innocent and some unexpectedly mature or edgy. This accidental exposure sparked my curiosity and broadened my perspective on art and creativity in ways I hadn’t anticipated. As a child, encountering these diverse expressions—sometimes just by typing simple queries like "ash and pikachu in love"—taught me about the complexity of online communities and the unique culture that formed around fandoms. It also made me reflect on how much internet safety and content moderation have evolved since then. In retrospect, unrestricted internet access helped me develop an early understanding of both the power and the risks of digital content. While it sometimes exposed me to things that were not age-appropriate, it also cultivated a spirit of exploration and taught me to think critically about what I encountered online. This duality is something many who experienced the early internet can relate to, revealing how much that formative period shaped our digital literacy today.
